“I’m eagerly anticipating this cross-disciplinary, transnational group exhibition. Challenging Western-centric narratives of art history, Kaihō: Japanese Women Artists after 1945 is set to foreground a diverse group of women artists that emerged in postwar Japan and have long been overlooked. I’m particularly looking forward to seeing Mako Idemitsu’s experimental multi-media installations. Informed by her early engagement with consciousness-raising groups during the Women’s Liberation Movement in the 1970s, her video works explore identity, familial relationships, gender roles and domesticity.”

“For over five decades, Sunil Gupta has produced a deeply intimate and moving body of personal and political photographic work that explores the visibility of queer identity, race, migration and the family. Offering a comprehensive overview of the artist’s work, this major survey at Kettle’s Yard will bring together key bodies of work including his iconic early street photographs Christopher Street, shot in the mid-1970s in Greenwich Village, New York, in the wake of the Stonewall Riots.”

“I’ve long admired Auto Italia’s rigorous and distinctive programme and I am very excited about their forthcoming exhibition with American artist, performer and activist Del LaGrace Volcano, which marks a long overdue institutional exhibition of their work in the UK. Self-described as ‘born making trouble’, Volcano has produced an extraordinary body of work that are a testament to love, desire and community. This will no doubt be a timely presentation.”
