P.IN.E.A stands for Photography, Intermedia et Al. The name is inspired by the pineal eye of early vertebrates—a centrally located third eye on the parietal bone of the skull with photoreceptive properties. Like a regular paired eye, the pineal eye consists of a lens, retina, and optic nerve, but it lacks an iris. It also functions as a kind of compass for navigation.

Equipped with this “third eye,” P.IN.E.A offers orientation within the cosmos of apparatus-based images and opens up new perspectives on the photographic medium. A core concern of P.IN.E.A is the interweaving of the digital and the analog in order to do justice to the various material states of photography. For this reason, P.IN.E.A Periodical is published continuously online and, beginning in 2026, semiannually in print.

In a world where our engagement with images is undergoing radical change, P.IN.E.A is particularly committed to the analysis of post-photographic practices. Especially in the age of automated image generation and the dematerialized consumption of visual content, the authenticity and legibility of apparatus-based images must be renegotiated.
